Major and Brynn’s love story in Bayou Sweetheart by Lexi Blake, book five in her Butterfly Bayou series is a wonderful, and enjoyable small town story. Former child actress Brynn Person is in Papillon, Louisiana to film a movie that she hopes will transition her from child actor to full blown movie star. She happens upon Deputy Major Blanchard in a precarious position and lends a hand to help him. This adorable but muddy meet-cute is caught on a wildlife video cam and happens to goes viral. With an instant attraction between these two, sparks fly, hijinks ensue, chemistry sizzles, and drama occurs. Major is trying to balance an array of blind dates, his dog Dolly, and his father slipping deeper into dementia. Neither Brynn nor Major are in a place to start a relationship at this point in their lives. They are both busy with their careers and parents, so their attraction to each other throws them both off. With Brynn’s overbearing mother, the pressure being in the spotlight creates on her and Major’s dad health issues, these two have their work cut out for them on their before they can find happiness, love, and a future together.

Major has to real life decisions to make and while he doesn’t handle them all perfectly, it makes him more lovable. It wasn’t just Brynn ‘s pretty face and fame that attracted Major to her; encouraging her to consider options outside of acting. With so many people relying on her, a domineering and meddlesome mother/manager, and self-doubt, Brynn doesn’t know what her future might hold. Being in this small and charming town, Brynn begins to find herself and understand that her wants and needs should be a priority. This story had all the feels: sadness for Major’s dad, laughing at the antics of Papillon’s citizens, from the elderly neighbors to Brynn’s Hollywood family, Brynn’s sister Ally, to golf cart driving Greg, to reminiscing with characters from previous books, to cheering for Major and Brynn. The animals added another layer to this story. Mastermind Brian behind the string of thefts, Dolly and Brynn’s Corgi Duke, provided the comic relief to balance out some of the deeper emotions of this book.

Ms. Blake wrote a story that should definitely not be missed. She provided a fun tale that was sweet and sassy, fun and flirting, with love, laughter, magnetic attraction, sparks, chemistry, and difficult decisions to be made.  I totally enjoyed and highly recommend Bayou Sweetheart to other readers and look forward to the next book in the series.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
