I adored Willa and Sawyer in Won't Back Down by Harper Jackson, book one in the Wayward Sons series, is a marriage of protection, small town, best friend's little sister, friends to lovers, romantic suspense with a protective, former military hero and strong found family vibes. There are possible triggers in this story: drowning, PTSD, panic attacks, death of a loved one, murder, and kidnapping.

 

Willa Hollingsworth drowned when she was sixteen, only to be rescued by Sawyer Malone, her brother’s best friend and son of the town’s drunk. Her parents institutionalized for help with her memory about the incident, which traumatized her. Rescued and removed from there by her brother Jace, she moved back to Hatterwick to rebuild her life; becoming estranged from her parents. Since returning she’s been rebuilding her life, reconnected with her grandparents, helped the community, has good friends, and her trusty pitbull Roy to keep her safe. Sawyer is back on the island after being injured and discharged from the Navy. His new mission is to keep an eye on Willa for her brother; but seeing her in person again reminds him that she is the girl who has had his heart forever. During the past year Willa lost both of her grandparents and when Willa’s grandfather’s will is read, threats are made by her father; causing Sawyer to step up and agree to marry her in order to keep her safe. When a skull is discovered on the beach, the trauma from that night, hidden in her subconscious, starts to be revealed, putting her in great danger. Willa needs to figure out what she saw that was so devastating and traumatic that it caused her to have PTSD and anxiety attacks; as well as put her in danger again.

Drama, deceit, trust and reliving the past make this a wonderful story. I honestly didn’t figure out who the bad guy was until the end. I’m looking forward to reading the stories of the rest of the Wayward Sons and learning more about Gwen’s disappearance.
