The Best Man’s Baby by Victoria James

πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

The Best Man’s Baby by Victoria James, book two in her Red River series, is a beautiful story about how two successful people come out of terrible childhoods with few, or no, issues. Claire is the maid of honor to her life-long crush, Jake, being the best man at his brother’s wedding. Being the last to leave shouldn’t mean she should go off with him, but given the chance why not break all the rules; if only for one night. After Jake takes off for six weeks, Claire is positive that Jake is unable to settle down and be responsible. Pregnancy hormones and the fact that she's just plain pissed off lead to quite a hysterical scene when Jake finally comes back to town. Jake is shocked to find out that he is going to be a daddy and furious that Claire seems to have written him out of their lives before he even know his child existed. Jake has an uphill battle to fight in order to gain Claire's trust and to prove to her that he can be everything she needs. Claire needs to let Jake in enough to give him a chance, and to help him finally deal with some very deep childhood demons.

Claire and Jake brought different strengths to their patched-together relationship, in addition to their impending parenthood. Claire's reactions were realistic and Jake's painful past was downright heartbreaking. Their journey is a wonderful mixture of emotions, swoon worthy moments and passion. The emotional, magnetic, and sizzling chemistry between them is perfect. Their banter is flirtatious and snarky. The secondary characters are endearing. I highly recommend The Best Man’s Baby to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.
