Winter Nights at the Bay Bookshop by Jessica Redland
Winter Nights at the Bay Bookshop by Jessica Redland is a beautiful, emotional, heartwarming story about forgiveness, grief, loss, healing, hope, friendship, family bonds finding the right person, and possibly a bit of holiday magic.
Lily Appleton runs the family owned Bay Bookshop alongside
her father. When her father requires surgery and cannot work, Lily advertises
for help, never imagining that Lars Johannsson would be one of those who responds.
Lars was once a friend but when they started at the same school, he badly hurt
her feelings; leaving a mark on her heart. Lars has recently sold his business
and finds himself lost and unsure of what comes next. When his friend shows him
the advertisement for the bookshop job, he sees it as an opportunity for a new
start in a place filled with warmth, stories, memories, and community. What
complicates matters is the past he shares with Lily, a past that has lingered
far longer than either of them expected.
Ms. Redland beautifully weaves a story that balances tender romance with themes
of forgiveness, second chances, and the family, community, and the healing
power of books. Lily and Lars’s journey is emotional, filled with vulnerability
and honesty, and chemistry. One of the most captivating aspects of the novel is
the setting itself, Bay Books feels alive on the page, with its cozy shelves,
festive atmosphere, and sense of belonging. It is the kind of bookshop every
reader dreams of visiting. The inclusion of Icelandic traditions through Lars adds
a fresh and memorable element to the narrative, enriching the festive backdrop
with unique cultural touches. I will admit I shed a few tears in a few places, Jessica
really does know how to move people with her writing.
This might be the first book by Ms. Redland that I’ve read,
but will definitely not be my last.
