Fair Play by Kat Mizera, book six in the LA Phantoms series, is an emotional, heartwarming, healing, age gap, teammate’s sister, hockey romance, about loss, family, unselfishness, moving on, and love. After watching her parents die in an accident that left 15 year old Billie Michener severely injured, 18 year old Bodi Michener knows he needs to take care of her. He skips college to play minor league hockey and eventually gets called up from his minor league team in Phoenix to the LA Phantoms of the NHL bringing Billie with him.
NHL player Rome Castellano is a late addition to
the L.A. Phantoms team and is trying to find his groove after being traded.
He’s also older and knows that his time in the NHL is winding down. Back in his
hometown of LA with its high rent costs, he is rooming with Bodi Michener, one
of his younger teammates, to help cut down on expenses. Rome went out to a club
with some teammates and ended up helping a womanwith a man that just won’t take
no for an answer. They share a dance, have a moment, and part ways; only
sharing first names, Rome and Billie. When Bodi asks him for help in getting his
sister and moving her out of her apartment because of a bad situation with
roommates, he readily agrees. Imagine when he sees Bodi’s sister and realizes
that it’s Billie from the club; Billie who he has dreamt about every night
since their meeting.
Billie Michener is
almost done with college and now needs a place to stay after an incident with
her roommates. She temporarily moves in
with her brother, Bodi, and Rome, sleeping on the couch while attending classes
and working. Her brother is very overprotective of Billie, and warns Rome to
stay away from her. The major problem is the chemistry Billie and Rome had from
that night at the club is still there. Between the fact that Rome is much older
than Billie and they are at different places in their lives they should avoid
each other; but not with this living situation. In fact, the more time they
spend together lines begin to blur. When Rome is injured during a game, it is
Billie who is there to help him; and lines are crossed. Billie wants to keep
this a secret, especially from her brother, until after the season so that it
won’t cause problems in the locker room or on the ice; if only that was
possible.
Rome has been in the
league for awhile and has been with several teams. He’s trying to find his
position in the team and how he can fit in with his teammates. He’s extra
guarded from being traded so much and from two failed marriages. Billie is the
light he needed in the darkness he was having in his life. Billie is smart,
independent and driven. She and her brother are close, especially after losing
their parents in a car accident, but although Bodi is extremely overprotective
of her, he’s forgets that she’s an adult working on a college degree who can
make her own decisions. The character growth of Billie and Rome showed how
connected they were as they worked on their relationship. The ending was great and
has me excited from the teaser for Bodi’s story and I can’t wait to read it.
