The Grump Next Door by Brighton Walsh

The
Grump Next Door by Brighton Walsh, book one in the Steele Brothers of Starlight
Cove series, is a fun, wonderful, humorous,
heartwarming, single mother, grumpy landlord, set in a small town. This is a
spin-off from the Starlight Cove series and yes you will catch up with some the
characters from those stories; especially gossip queen Mabel.
Sutton, a travelling
nurse, has been surviving on her own since she was a teen. This single mom and
her teenage daughter, Laurel, are on their way from Atlanta to Starlight Cove
for her next job. Stopping for the night and needing a break from her daughter,
Sutton spends a little time at the bar, sharing a kiss with a stranger to avoid
a creepy guy. That kiss really packed a punch because the two end up having
spending some time burning up the sheets in the guy’s room. The next day when
Sutton arrives at their rental house, imagine her surprise to realize her
landlord is her one-night stand.
Former pro football
player Atlas Steele is a big, tough grump, living in the small town he grew up
in, coaching the local high school football team, supporting his family while
helping run his family’s bar and keep his mom and brothers in line. This big
teddy bear might act like a grump but he definitely has a golden heart deep inside
who also reads romance books his librarian mom suggests. Once Sutton, and
Laurel, enters his sphere, life has he’s known it is no longer what he expects.
These two get under his skin, bring out his protectiveness, and soon become his
world.
Having a fake dating
relationship allows Sutton to be protected from her stalking ex and gets Atlas’
mom off his back. Not sure how fake this relationship is going to be as
everyone notices the sparks flying between them. Atlas’ reaction to the kitty
delivery squad lived up to grumpiness, but at the same time showed his tender
side. There’s a Gilmore Girls type vibe to Sutton’s relationship with Laurel between
the small town setting and their banter, sassiness, and sarcasm. This continues
with Atlas and his relationship with his girls. After all, Daddy Grump was there
for them. I look forward to the next book in this series.
