Keeping It Real by Tracy Solheim
Keeping
It Real by Tracy Solheim, book one in the Milwaukee Mayhem
hockey series is an emotional, heartwarming,
healing, second chance story with a journey
of found family, and forever love. There's humor, forgiveness, a bit of a
mystery, locker-room antics, instant fatherhood, complex feelings, an adorable
dog, all kinds of chemistry, in this swoon-worthy romance
Alek Bergeron is the goalie for the Milwaukee Mayhem hockey team. His ex-best
friend, Jamie Colbert, and his wife Madison are killed in an accident, leaving eight-year-old
son Finn to Alek., Sheridan Colbert, Jamie’s younger sister, has been caring
for Finn and wants guardianship of Finn. Sheridan and Alek have a complicated
history, she she’s been in love with him since she was a teenager, but Alek has
only thought of her as Jamie’s little sister. They agree to co-parent Finn
until the end of the hockey season, with Sheridan, Finn, and Hattie the dog moving
from New Hampshire to Alek’s home in Milwaukee. The turmoil and tragedy in their lives is
heartbreaking, yet they find their way together as a makeshift family.
Forced to live together and become a little family, Alek realizes that Sheridan
is no longer a kid, but a beautiful woman he is attracted to. This leads to a
second chance relationship for these two, complete with sizzling sparks, and romantic
moments.
As their relationship grows they must also deal with quite a few
unexpected twists and turns. There is the mystery about Finn’s parents, which
is slowly revealed, adding suspense to the emotional stakes. Once they finally
solve one mystery, additional secrets come to light; secrets that could tear
their little family apart. I loved the sub-story with Finn’s dog, Hattie. Her
rising success as a social media star brought humor and warmth to the book.
Ms. Solheim wrote an emotional story filled with
wonderful characters, humor, love, spice, found family (both hockey and real)
and a funny and adorable little boy and his huge Bernese Mountain dog. Add in
the secrets, plot twists and turns and the pages practically turned themselves
so that I couldn't put it down. I laughed, cried and thoroughly enjoyed this
book. I can't wait for the next story in the Mayhem series to see where we go
with this new team and their WAGS.
