Each chapter begins with a tidbit from The Art of Being a Fine Gentleman by Sir Dudley Samson Pemberton Fine, the father of the heroine; which is a nice touch.   Roderick, Rick, Cosworth, the Duke of Stonerick, while feeling the beginning effects of a fever, succumbs to his mother’s demand that he marry by running his finger along a list of potential brides given to him by his mother. He fears that not having an heir fast enough before his dilapidating fevers consume him will allow his cousin to inherit the dukedom. Edwina Fine is in shock when she receives a proposal by mail from a Duke. This is the story of Lucy Peterson, a female apothecary who uses her scientific skills to help people, and Jonathon Thorne, a private investigator, hired to track down and prove that her ex stole from her the formula to what is sure to be a lucrative tonic. As they work together to solve the case and protect her business, Lucy and Jonathon develop a romantic relationship that challenges the social norms of their time. This series will continue, following the lives of Lucy’s sisters, who are also involved in science and medicine. The book is a great choice for readers who enjoy historical romance, mystery, and feminism, and who want to read a positive and inspiring story. Cape Rage is perfectly named as the members of the crime family lose control the deeper we get into the story. They even have their own island, making penetrating the inner sanctum extremely difficult. But that’s what this undercover agent was charged with and it gives us a heart-pounding rush here and there. Danny Barrett is an undercover cop who is called in after a bank robbery. His assignment brings him to an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he’s to get inside a crime family, the Danby family, which has been operating for years.
